The Civil Guard communicated the rescue in the waters of the Balearic Islands 19 immigrants of North African origin, all in apparent good health, on board a boat by a regular liner shipwho transferred them to the port of Palma for disembarkation.
The rescue took place this Wednesday evening, at 9:20 p.m., at 80 miles south of Cabrera Island and the intervention of the tax and border patrol of Puerto de Palma was necessary.
The rescue was carried out by the ferry Jean Nicole, OMI 9161948, which covers the regular line Algeria-Marseille.
We must not forget that the Balearic Islands already have double So far this year, the total number of illegal immigrants arriving on the shores of the Islands is 2,023, with two months left to close the year. Although last year 2,278 people arrived on 276 boats, in 2024 they have already reached 4,694 migrants on board 284 boats.
This is a worrying figure reached at the beginning of November, with two months to close the year. A period during which everything indicates that the avalanche of boats will continue, so the figure compared to 2023 will continue to increase its difference.
The socialist Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaskadenied this Wednesday that the Algeria-Balearic Islands migration route exists despite the avalanche of boats, provoking the indignation of the Civil Guard. The Professional Justice Association of the Civil Guard (Jucil) warned against 115% increase of the number of illegal immigrants arriving in the archipelago in 2024 compared to last year.
A situation that the association described as “unprecedented migration crisis“, notably in Formentera, an island which, with only 28 Civil Guard agents, managed to welcome more than 2,000 immigrants irregular so far this year.
“The civil guards stationed on this island are overwhelmed and confronted with mafias who operate with more audacity and violence. There is an urgent need to reinforce personnel and provide the island with a maritime service base to guarantee the safety of migrants, civil guards and citizens and residents,” Jucil said.
For his part, the PP regional senator of the Balearic Islands Miquel Jerez Tuesday, during the Senate control session, he denounced “the Spanish government’s abandonment in the face of migratory chaos in the Balearic Islands.” He popular harshly questioned the fact that, despite the data, Marlaška once again denied, in Parliament, the consolidated migratory route between Algeria and the Balearic archipelago.
“Over the past seven days, almost a thousand migrants have reached the shores of the Balearic Islands. Among them, young people, children and pregnant women. The records were duplicated. We will close the year with more than five thousand migrants on our territory, “These figures show that there is a consolidated road and a comfortable access route for mafias that traffic people,” Jerez told the Senate.
Senator PP assured that “This route exists because Spain does not have a clear immigration policy and because there is no way to fight against these avalanches. In the Balearics, 1,600 kilometers of coastline cannot be controlled with the boats we have. “We are clearly at a disadvantage.”
