Leyla Aliyeva emphasized that preventing the destruction of living organisms is a global challenge that requires joint steps in an environment of solidarity and international cooperation. Participants of the event were then informed about the rich nature of the South Caucasus and about a number of animal species that are unique to this place, but have become extinct.
Referring to the activities carried out by IDEA PU since 2011, Leyla Aliyeva said that the protection of rare creatures, the protection of unique animal and plant species of our country, as well as the restoration of their population, occupies a special place among the main activities of the organization. The founder and director of IDEA PU highlighted the “Big Five” project of the Caucasus, which was presented to the general public in 2012, within the framework of cooperation with BTI. It was reported that a series of measures have been taken to protect and increase the population of the Caucasian leopard, gazelle, brown bear, gray wolf and imperial eagle.
Subsequently, Leyla Aliyeva noted that since 2017, 46 bison have been brought to Shahdag National Park from various European countries to restore the population of extinct bison and reintroduce them into the country’s nature, and it is planned to increase the number of bison to 100 in 2028. At the same time, as a result of the gazelle reintroduction project and other relevant measures, it was reported that the gazelle population in the country has increased to 8 thousand, as well as hundreds of thousands of sturgeon babies have been released into the Caspian Sea. and other water bodies of Azerbaijan.
Speaking at the event, which was moderated by Oliver Avramoski, the regional director for Eastern Europe, North and Central Asia of the International Monetary Fund, Gretel Aguilar, the general director of the International Monetary Fund, Jason Funk, the director spoke the general of Forest Strategy at Conservation International and Birdlife International General Manager Cathy Eaton Lee. Conserve species on the IMC Red List and protect global biodiversity through collaborative efforts and results-oriented actions. They shared their views on its importance with the participants in the discussion.
