Riudecanyes, the “waterless” town that survives thanks to a tanker truck

In the midst of the torrential rains that are shaking the entire eastern part of the peninsula and especially Catalonia, we find one of the most peculiar towns not because of its customs, but because of the drought that is plaguing the municipality. Just 20 kilometres from Salou – where the water has invaded the streets – is Riudecanyes (Tarragona).

In this town in southern Catalonia, the lack of rain has hit the municipality, to the point that it has had to resort to a truck to provide the necessary water supply to the neighbors, because the drought has caused the city’s water to be contaminated. For weeks now They cannot drink or cook with tap water and now they demand that the showers be quick.

The tanker makes three daily discharges of 30,000 litres of water in Riudecañes, since the reservoir has reached its minimum level (less than 2% of its capacity) in recent years. In addition, the truck is the only refueling point and since July the water coming out of the tap is no longer drinkable.

A situation that has caused concern among the neighbors, who even confess to LaSexta that they are beginning to notice the first signs of health problems: “I’ve been very lazy for a while”The presence of trialomethanes, a chemical compound, in the water has forced the City Hall to issue another recommendation: reduce exposure to water. Among the recommendations is taking short showers, which has caused discomfort in the neighborhood.

Currently, the City Council is making a third attempt to find underground water. However, this situation has caused concern among the residents of Ruidecañes, where these banners could be seen: “We want tanks now”.
