CaixaForum Palma hosts the exhibition until March 2 XIX. The century of the portrait. Collections of the Prado Museum. From Enlightenment to modernitydedicated to the growth that portraiture experienced at that time in Spain in all its artistic manifestations.

The director of CaixaForum Palma, Margarita Pérez-Villegasand curator of the exhibition and responsible for the conservation of 19th century paintings at the Prado National Museum, Javier Baronpresented this new exhibition this Thursday.

Around 200,000 people were able to see this exhibition in different centers of the CaixaForum network, which ends its journey in the capital of the Balearic Islands. It is composed of a total of 145 pieces with examples of Goya, Madrazo, Rosales, Fortuny, Pinazo, Sorolla and Benlliureamong many others.

It was organized jointly by the “la Caixa” Foundation and the Prado National Museum, as part of the strategic alliance that the two institutions have maintained since 2011 to bring to the public part of the artistic heritage preserved by the National Museum of the Prado. .

Indeed, as they emphasized in a statement, thanks to this agreement Many works from the Prado will travel to Palma for the first time.

In detail, the exhibition explores transformation of people’s public image in the 19th century and offers visitors the opportunity to enter the era which saw the birth of the economic and social structures which have shaped the contemporary era.

Likewise, it is divided into eight thematic areas: the image of power, the discovery of childhood, feminine identities, masculine identities, the image of death, portraits and self-portraits of artists, amicorum effigies images of writers, musicians and actors and the artist in the studio.

Visitors will be able to follow three different routeswith audio guides downloadable via QR codes, which will carry out three different readings of the route considering artistic techniques, 19th century society and clothing.

Please note that during the assembly of the exhibition, a team recorded all the processes that often remain in the shadows, such as opening boxes or preparing conservation reports artworks and interviews. With this material, a documentary has been prepared which can be seen on the CaixaForum+ platform and, in addition, at the exit of the exhibition, a fragment can be viewed via a QR code.

On the other hand, activities were also organized so that all audiences could approach the world of portraiture from different angles. Thus, the curator of the exhibition, Javier Barón, will explain in his conference planned for the opening the scope and particularities of the exhibition.

It will also be carried out visual arts cycle ‘Face, mask and image. The construction of the “I” through artwhich addresses the history of portraiture in the history of humanity. The seminar is coordinated by the architect, art presenter and professor Miguel del Pozo.

The cultural center will host guided tours and visits in the form of workshops under the title With a 6 and a 4, a portrait story and in the form of meetings accompanied by coffee.
