Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, founder and director of the Public Union IDEA (Global Dialogue for the Environment) Leyla Aliyeva On November 21, the COP29 Presidency, IDEA PU and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) participated in the panel discussion on “Global Leaders Dialogue: Climate Action and Protecting Biodiversity to Achieve a Future Positive for Nature and Adapt to the Objectives of the Paris Agreement”.
Oku.Az reports that Leyla Aliyeva, speaking at the opening of the event held within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), welcomed the guests, highlighted the magnitude of the damage caused to our planet by climate change and biodiversity loss, and the need for urgent action by the international community. Participants in the event were informed about several animal species of the South Caucasus, especially in Azerbaijan, including the Caspian tiger and the Asiatic lion, which lived in the past but became extinct.
Leyla Aliyeva noted that since 2011 IDEA PU implemented a series of projects and measures to protect the unique nature and ecological balance of our country. Participants in the debate were informed about the “Big Five of the Caucasus”, the protection of bison, gazelles and Caspian sturgeon, as well as numerous activities carried out jointly with thousands of volunteers. At the end of her speech, Leyla Aliyeva called on participants to create new partnerships and joint efforts to ensure a more stable and healthy future.
Subsequently, President of COP29 Mukhtar Babayev, President of the UNFCCC Razan Al Mubarak, Director General of the Organization Grethel Aguilar, Director General of Operations Coordination of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Chhaya Kapilasrami, Secretary Executive of the Convention on Biological Diversity Astrid Schomaker, Director General of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Inger Andersen spoke and shared his ideas and suggestions on the discussion topics with the participants. Following the event, panel discussions were held with the participation of government and private sector leaders, ministers of environment and ecology from several countries.
