THE Deputation from Castellón was released in defense of the “fundamental role played by judges of peace in the administration of justice in small municipalities in the province” after learning that the Government the center intends eliminate them.
The provincial government will present a motion in plenary to express its rejection of the disappearance of this local authority, as provided for in the draft organic law on the organizational efficiency of the public justice service.
“THE Justice of proximity and the good management of conflicts cannot be understood without the figure of the justice of the peace in the small municipalities of our province, and that is why we demand its maintenance”, stressed the president of the Provincial Council, Marta Barrachina.
The provincial leader expressed “the essential work of proximity and contact” that the figure of the justice of the peace has carried out since its creation in 1885. And the fact is that, due to its proximity to the citizen and his environment, the justices of the peace know perfectly the context in which they act, the particularities of the problematic that arise and the needs of neighbors.
Since its creation, the justice of the peace has always had the function of extending the administration of Justice, particularly in the rural areas. Regarding their functions, they are generally responsible for tasks related to civil status, in addition to carrying out acts of conciliation and mediation among the neighbors.
“We must protect and strengthen the figure of justices of the peace because they are an essential part of our municipalities. Their disappearance represents a setback in citizen participation in the administration of justice. “The justice of the peace must continue to be a reference for consultation and mutual assistance between neighbors,” added the president of the Provincial Council.
However, through the motion that will be debated in the ordinary plenary session next September and that will be held next Tuesday 24, the provincial institution will show its rejection of the elimination of the figure of the justice of the peace. Likewise, the provincial institution will urge the Spanish government to preserve the figure of justices of the peace and provide them of resources material and human resources in line with current technical progress, so that they can fulfil and expand even more effectively their functions of collaboration and promotion of coexistence.
