Maíllo launches his new left-wing platform in Córdoba amid the debate on Sumar

There was no shortage of symbols: in the middle of the Plaza de la Corredera, the day Julio Anguita would have been 83 years old and with a name that recalls the Appeal for Andalusia that he had launched, which toured the villages and then made part United Left be an important force.

With all this memory explicitly present, the general coordinator of Izquierda Unida, Antonio Maillopresented in Cordoba Call for democracyan initiative born within the political formation itself, but with the aim of transcending it, and when it also debated the relationship with Sumar, confluence with which he participated in the last general elections.

The Call for Democracy will be launched this Saturday in Madrid, and it will be “an appeal to every person engaged with democracy to defend it. And this not only “in the face of attacks and deterioration democratic institutions themselves, but also to build a country project that gives hope in the face of the fear that those who do not want people to participate in politics want to arouse.

The idea is to create spaces for dialogue in different areas, to collect proposals from the population, from interested people and from those who until now have not considered that the existing proposals fully respond to their concerns. With this he will form his Call for Democracy program.

Now what will your future be? “Call for Democracy has the desire to transcend Izquierda Unida. We are even going to call on people in certain places who do not belong to any party to form this appeal and launch an appeal to define projects for better living in their neighborhoods. cities and in their cities,” he defended.

The idea, he insisted, is that it should be established as a sort of “safe haven for shipwrecked activists, who want to get involved and who, for the moment, have not tools“. The one who proposes the Call to Democracy is “non-partisan, although he is in favor of a project of social justice in Spain and from there a new hope is created”.

A beautiful alliance

As for whether he would run for office, he suggested yes, that the ideas would be reflected in a program presented to citizens, even if they are now in another phase. “It is an instrument that we offer to Spanish society and to people who want to build a project country full of hope, so it is theirs, not ours,” he said.

The material resulting from listening to the participants will be offered to organizations with which “a great social alliance“, but if it is done, it is “with a tremendous legacy, which is that it is not the product of a single political organization but it is the product of many people, of thousands of people who will contribute in the development of these proposals. “.

His relationship with Sumar is still unclear, although he has clarified that relations with the confluence are now good. He welcomed the election of the new spokesperson for the Congress of DeputiesVerónica Martínez, which for him is a way of building “from consensus”. “I believe that a new stage can begin in which we will develop a work of agreement and synthesis, which, I believe, is what pushes us all to get involved to move forward at this moment,” he said. insisted.

What will be justified in a proposal is the result of the contributions that will be made by interested people in various fields: the world of job and care, the right to decent housing, the defense of public services as a collective heritage and the management of energy resources “at a time of eco-social crisis”, in addition to promoting Spain as “a country of reception“.

It is about stopping being on the defensive “in the face of a verifiable offensive in social terms of values and politicians of the right and the right”.extreme rightwith very reactionary values”, said Antonio Maíllo. The process will last until the end of spring 2025.
