Health prohibits cosmetic surgery operations on anyone who is not a specialist doctor

The Official State Gazette (BOE) published this Saturday the decree of the Ministry of Health which limits the professionals who can perform cosmetic surgeries and which modifies Annex II of Royal Decree 1277/2003, of October 10, which establishes the general bases for the authorization of health centers, services and establishments.

This was announced by Mónica García’s office in a statement in which it warned that the “significant increase” in cosmetic surgical procedures and the “proliferation” of centers that offer them “have generated a growing social and health demand for better control of this activity.”

In this sense, the order aims to “guarantee” that these steps are taken. “exclusively” by trained professionals and “appropriate” qualifications. Health recalled that in September 2022, “in response to this need”, the Congress of Deputies approved a non-legislative proposal urging the Government to amend Royal Decree 1277/2003, with the aim of “strengthening” the regulations to “prevent intrusions and ensure that all health activities are carried out by duly qualified professionals.

Thus, this decree “updates” the definition of the Cosmetic Surgery Care Unit, which appears in Annex II of Royal Decree 1277/2003, and which encompasses all activities and procedures related to cosmetic surgery. The objective is to “restrict” the performance of cosmetic surgery procedures “to only professionals who have received specific training necessary as part of their training program.”

“Furthermore, they will only be able to perform these surgical operations in the areas theyare directly related to your medical specialty“, warned García’s department, explaining that only doctors with a specialty in plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery or another surgical or medical-surgical specialty that includes in its scope “skills” in aesthetic surgery will be able to perform this type of operation. training program.

In this context, the head of Health stressed that this measure is “undoubtedly a huge victory for the family of Sara, a woman who unfortunately lost her life after undergoing an intervention in a beauty center that did not have the necessary guarantees.” “His family’s struggle was essential to achieve this important change”he said about a ministerial decree with which, according to him, “we are taking an important step towards a safer health system, so that tragedies like Sara’s do not happen again.”
