The professor of Organic Chemistry and vice-rector for Research, Transfer and Innovation, José Miguel Garcia Pérez He was elected this Thursday as the new rector of the University of Burgos, after a day in which 10,298 people were called to vote and which ultimately recorded a participation of 15.4 percent of the votes.

Garcia, sole candidate for rector electionsrecorded 69.7 percent of the vote in favor, with 1,105 votes cast in his name, while 480 were white, accounting for 30.3 percent of the total. The number of abstentions stands at 8,713, according to provisional data provided by the Electoral Council. In the last elections for the rector, a turnout of 29.3 percent was recorded, which was affected by these elections, in which there was only one candidate.

By collective, José Miguel García obtained 74.5 percent of the votes of PDI 1, 78.5 percent of the votes of PDI 2, 49 percent of the votes of PTGAS and 74.4 percent of the votes of the student body.

In statements to the media, after knowing the result, the candidate and rector-elect, José Miguel García, wanted to thank the electorate and the university community for their participation, not only in these elections, but also in all the previous days of preparation of the community program. A thank you that he addressed to his team, which he described as “courageous” and of which he is convinced that they will work “very hard to meet all the challenges that await them”.

The challenges García said are “many,” and all in “favor of the community”not only the university, but also the socio-economic environment in which they are immersed both in Burgos and in its province.

Responding to media questions on abstention, particularly among the Technical, Management, Administration and Services Personnel (PTGAS), García indicated that they “expressed their discomfort on the one hand, and their support on the ‘other’, while adding that at the moment, as a team, it doesn’t ‘affect’ them. He thus assured that they would continue to work “in favor of PTGAS, for its improvement and equality with the rest of the public universities of Castilla y León”. “We will continue to work for each of them,” he added.

Regarding how he interprets the participation percentage, which ultimately amounted to 15.4 percent, García indicated that “Above 15 percent is a success when there is only one candidate”according to the company in charge of electronic voting. The percentage of blank votes was 30.3 percent.

“I consider it a success for all of us, not only for the candidate for the position of rector, but for the entire team who made an effort, going from faculty to faculty, from group to group, including this first draft proposal for the next six years, which these days has become a definitive proposal”, he indicated. A proposal that ensures that it remains “alive” and will continue to adapt to all times and to the requirements of society itself, of the industry, of the fabric socio-economic in general, without forgetting the student body either.

For his part, the ever rector Manuel Pérez Mateosdeclared himself “delighted” with the results and recalled that at “no time” did he hide that García was his “candidate”. Pérez Mateos also wanted to highlight the participation that there was today, “taking into account that there was only one candidate.”

“I am very happy that there is a orderly transitionwithout any surprises and that there is also continuity in all areas, which are numerous and very important”, he underlined. He thus underlined the percentages obtained by José Miguel García, which he described as “remarkable and notable”, and added that from that day on, for him, García is “the elected rector and therefore all decisions will pass into his hands”.

Asked about the date on which the witness will be officially handed over to him, Pérez Mateos recalled that He will continue to hold this position until the Junta de Castilla y León publishes the appointment. “From this moment I will become interim rector and he will have full operational and executive capacity from the moment he takes office, which will happen when the Junta de Castilla y León decides,” he said. he indicated.

According to the planned electoral calendar, the final proclamation will take place on November 26. The official appointment will take place when it is published in the Official Gazette of Castilla y León after its approval by the Government Council of the Junta de Castilla y León, there is no date yet for the official act of transfer of the baton of command by Manuel Pérez Mateos, which will take place during the inauguration ceremony of the new rector at the Auditorium of the University of Burgos.
