The lowering of the water level in the Caspian Sea has serious consequences for fish populations.
According to Khezerxeber.az, Caspian Sea fish species, which once provided 90 percent of the black caviar collected around the world, are now endangered.
Environmentalist Rovshan Abbasov stated that the reduction of sea water can cause serious ecological, economic and social problems. The habitat of unique species of flora and fauna that originally lived in the Caspian Sea may shrink and some species may become extinct. For example, the sturgeon and black caviar they produce are likely to decline.
According to the environmentalist, the decline in fish populations can have a major impact on the fishing industry. Demand for tourism facilities and services along the coast will decrease and economic activity will weaken. This will make the local market more dependent on imports.
It should be noted that the water level in the Caspian Sea has decreased by about 2.5 m over the past 30 years. In recent years, the annual decline has reached an alarming 20-30 centimeters. This rapid sinking poses serious environmental and economic risks that require urgent action.
