Balearic farmers ask hoteliers to buy their products

The first Conference on Local Products and Tourism, held on Thursday at the Balearic Hotel School, brought together hoteliers, farmers and breeders to seek new commercial agreements. The meeting took place in the presence of the Federation of Hotel Industry of Majorca (FEHM), the Association of Ecological Pages of Majorca (Apaema), Asaja-Baleares, the Agro-Food Cooperatives of Baleares, the Unió de Pagesos de Mallorca and UPA Baleares.

The executive vice-president of the FEHM, Maria José Aguiló, explained that the content of this conference is a line in which his entity has been working for some time and what he hears is establish agreements and collaborations between companies and producers, which encourage the consumption of local products.

In addition, a total of 64 local farmers were able to exhibit their products so that hoteliers could get to know them and even become their suppliers.

Aguiló said they also sought to know the operational needs and obstacles of each party and that together they can resolve them.

“The aim is to strengthen these relationships and achieve greater purchasing of local products, in this case in the hospitality sector, but this should also be extended to restaurants and even public administration itself” , he stressed.

For his part, the president of the Camp Mallorquí cooperative, Miguel Gual, claimed the “fundamental” role played by agricultural cooperatives and their partners in food production and work on the land.

“The question is whether we want to continue to sow and repaint Mallorca green”» said Gual, regarding the proliferation of photovoltaic fields on the island.

The president of the Balearic Agro-Food Cooperatives, Jerónima Bonaféhighlighted the importance of these days to raise awareness of local products to the tourism sector so that together they can contribute to the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the agri-food sector of the Balearic Islands.

Thus, after the presentation of experiences by agricultural entities, face-to-face meetings took place with producers and hospitality sellers with the aim of creating or consolidating business relationships.
