“When you go into the sea, you see reality”

Last CEI Barometer reveals that the arrival of migrants is the main concern in Spain, a question that falls to fifth place if we are asked what problem “personally” affects us the most. What is the basis of this concern?

At laSexta, we speak with Oualid Benaliloua migrant who arrived in Spain at the age of 16 on a four-hour journey. “Before getting on the boat, you are very motivated, but when you enter the sea you already see reality and you say ‘holy shit,'” he admits. He was taken to a juvenile center, where they helped him look for work.

The government interprets this change as the consequence of a summer rich in political statements. The minister Angel Victor Torres He assured that images of boats are seen “as happened in 2006”, which “have an effect”. In fact, between July and September, concerns about immigration doubled, reaching almost the levels seen in 2006, when the Cayucos crisis broke out.

It has also been affected by statements linking immigration to crime that increase this concern, as when the leader of the PP, Alberto Nuñez Feijoosaid that the Spaniards had “right to go out into the street in peace“.

The Secretary of the FEPA Board of Directors Juantxo Gil believes that there have been “intentions on the part of certain political parties” to make people believe that we are facing “a great invasion“, creating a distorted image that has nothing to do with reality.
