Transport rewards 550,000 euros for the installation of anti-wildlife beacons on the N-502, between Parrillas and Sevilleja de la Jara

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded the installation work of wildlife deterrent tags on several sections of the N-502 road, in the province of Toledo. The action will take place on different sections of road over 93.9 kilometers, between Parrillas (85.7 kilometer) and Sevilleja de la Jara (179.6 kilometer).

The objective of this intervention is reduce accidents caused by the collision of animals crossing the road, enhancing the safety of drivers and increasing the protection of surrounding wildlife.

The project includes the installation of deterrent and wildlife control markers. Wildlife deterrent beacons feature flashing LED and ultrasonic lights that emit acoustic and light signalsto alert drivers to the possible presence of animals and dissuade them from crossing the road. These beacons, powered by a solar panel, are only activated when driving on the road or in the presence of an animal within a detection radius of between 13 and 17 meters. Its installation is carried out every 20 meters, thus protecting the entire length of the road.

For their part, the control beacons are only activated in the presence of vehicles, and will be located at a distance of between 150 and 200 meters from wildlife deterrent devices. In this way, when detecting a vehicle, the control beacon activates the wildlife deterrent devices, warning both the driver and the animal of possible danger.

Finally, fences will be placed on one of the margins of the sections.

This intervention is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), which plans to invest up to €659 million, excluding VAT, from NextGenerationEU funds in the modernization of more than 80 tunnels, the protection of vulnerable users and wildlife, promoting sustainability, energy efficiency and noise reduction on the national road network.
