The Barnier government announced on Saturday evening

Michel Barnier had promised the announcement of his government “before Sunday”. On Saturday evening, shortly after 7 p.m., the formation of the new government team was announced. Composed of 39 ministers and secretaries of state (40 including the Prime Minister), it reflects the search for balance between the different parties supporting this coalition: 12 are members of the Ensemble pour la République (EPR), 10 of the Republicans (LR, 11 with Michel Barnier), 3 of the MoDem, 2 of Horizons, 2 of the Union of Democrats and Independents (UDI) or even 2 of the Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories group (LIOT).

It is not surprising that this government is strongly anchored to the right. The appointment of Bruno Retailleau, a very conservative senator (LR) from Vendée, as Interior Minister is causing surprise even in Macronist ranks. Some outgoing ministers have been re-elected: Sébastien Lecornu and Rachida Dati in the same ministry (the first being the army and the second being culture), Agnès Pannier-Runacher (who is moving from forestry to ecological transition), Jean-Noël Barrot (from Europe to foreign affairs) or Catherine Vautrin (from health to territories). The only left-wing minister is the former socialist Didier Migaud, appointed Minister of Justice and second in protocol after the Prime Minister.

Clashes between Israel and Hezbollah

Tensions rose further this weekend on the border between Lebanon and Israel. In response to the Israeli operation that led to the explosion of communication devices (thirty-nine dead, 2,931 wounded) and the attack in southern Beirut (forty-five dead, including sixteen Hezbollah members), the Lebanese Islamist movement sent, during the night from Saturday to Sunday, a major salvo of rockets into northern Israel, with some “150 rockets, cruise missiles and drones,” according to the Israeli army’s count.

The large-scale attack led to the closure of local schools for at least 48 hours, while hundreds of thousands of people took refuge in bomb shelters. The Israeli army continued its bombings on Lebanese territory, claiming to be targeting Hezbollah sites.
