TikTok sued in US over death of 10-year-old after viral challenge

In the United States, a viral challenge ended in tragedy for the Anderson family. Nylah, 10, tried the “Blackout Challenge” when she was alone in her room. The challenge is to hold your breath until she passed out and the girl lost her life. “You never know what they might find on their phone or what they’re trying to do, you think a 10-year-old wouldn’t do it. They’re trying because they’re kids,” said Tawainna Anderson, mother of the deceased minor.

His family could not overcome the loss caused by such an absurd challenge. “It’s a pain that doesn’t go away“It’s like a knife in the throat and I’m so hurt,” the mother said.

However, a US appeals court has opened the possibility that TikTok could be held liable for Nylah’s death. An exception, because the platforms are exempt from answering for third party content, but the girl saw the video on the personalized recommendations from TikTok. Technology decides what type of content to display with an algorithm that they can shape, as the court maintains.

With this trial, Tawainna Anderson, more than seeking revenge, seeks avoid new cases like that of his daughter: “It is time for these dangerous challenges to end and for other families not to feel pain that we live every day.”
