The Temporary Reception Center for Foreigners (CATE) already has more than 700 people, it is approaching the limit of its reception capacity
As announced, the flow of arrivals on the Canary Islands Route has begun, putting to the test the resources of the island of El Hierro, which only today received about 500 migrants.
The fourth cayuco that arrived on the island on Thursday afternoon had 159 migrants on board, with whom the island has received a total of 494 people in the last few hours. Also yesterday, another boat arrived on the island of Gran Canaria with 121 people on board.
The cayuco was located by radar about nine miles south of the island and was escorted to the dock by the Civil Guard patrol boat Río Guadiato, which carries out surveillance work between the south of Tenerife and El Hierro.
In the early afternoon, a cayuco arrived 205 migrants and in the early morning two more with 130 people in total.
In addition to a specific medical team that will strengthen health care on the island, the Civil Guard has already requested the reinforcement of agents before the arrival forecast the coming months, when migrants will likely take advantage of the better sailing conditions in the “Sea of Calm” to undertake the journey.
Currently, the Temporary Reception Center for Foreigners (CATE) of El Hierro, in the city of San Andrés, in the municipality of Valverde, already accommodates a total of 701 migrants while waiting for them to be directed to resources outside the island. This represents a challenge for the staff of the center, supported by the NGO collective “Cœur Orange – Ebria Sonko”. The facilities are close to the limit of your capacitysince it has space to accommodate around 800 people.
