Scholz’s party wins elections in Brandenburg

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) won the state election in Brandenburg with 30.9% of the vote, while the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party came in second with 29.2%, according to official results published by the electoral commission.

In third place is Sarah Wagenknecht’s newly formed Union for Reason and Justice (SSV) with 13.5 percent of the vote, and in fourth place is the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with 12.1 percent.

Both of the SPD’s federal coalition partners, the Greens and the Free Liberals (FDP), failed to pass the 5% threshold and did not enter the state parliament. The left-wing party also failed to enter parliament.

Voter turnout in the elections was 72.9%.
