Six people died in Japan due to heavy rains

Six people have died, two are missing and eight more remain isolated in Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture after record rainfall hit the area, NHK television reported.

Ten workers were trapped in the Nakaya tunnel after a landslide, two of whom died. In addition, the dead were found after a landslide under the rubble of a residential building, one person was found after a river flood.

The worst impact of the disaster was felt in the town of Noto and the cities of Wajima and Suzu: these are the settlements that suffered the most during the strong earthquake of January 1 this year. Over the weekend, the evacuation of 131,400 people in seven cities and towns in Ishikawa Prefecture was announced.

Wajima recorded record rainfall on Saturday, with more than 300 millimeters falling in 24 hours, the highest since 1975. In the city of Suzu, more than 200 millimeters fell in 24 hours. The rain continued on Sunday.
