Marxist Anura Kumara Dissanayake, president of Sri Lanka after winning Sunday’s election

The Marxist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayakewho emerged victorious in Sri Lanka’s weekend presidential election, was sworn in as president of the island nation on Monday at a ceremony at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.

Dissanayake, 55, a candidate for the National People’s Power (NPP) coalition, won the election with 5,740,179 votes, or more than 42% of the votes cast.

Marxist leader replaces Ranil Wickremesinghe as presidentcame to power in 2022 after the civil revolt that the island experienced due to the serious economic crisis, and which led to the fall of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, then head of state, whom the population accused of his mismanagement of the economy.
