Sánchez brings message to UN to fight hoaxes and disinformation

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, begins his agenda this Monday in New York on the occasion of the United Nations High-Level Weekwhere he intends to convey the central message of his Democratic Action Plan raise awareness of the need to combat hoaxes and disinformation. This fight considers that strengthens democracies and combats extremism and that is why he will advocate for greater attention to this problem before the international community.

Accompanied by him Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel AlbaresSánchez will be the protagonist of a series of events that will begin this Monday, when he will participate in a meeting organized by the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, within the framework of the so-called Future Summit.

He will also speak at the plenary session of the summit on Monday before beginning a series of bilateral meetings, including with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Beyond the fact that he could be present on Wednesday in his speech before the UN General Assembly, the day before, the way to confront extremism and the need to put an end to hoaxes and disinformation will be the common thread of a forum at the UN that he sponsored with the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The presence of around twenty heads of state or government from all continents at this event organized to share how to strengthen democracies and combat extremist forces that undermine citizens’ trust in their institutions.

Among the leaders who will participate alongside Sánchez and Lula are French President Emmanuel Macron; British Prime Minister Keir Starmer; and Chilean President Gabril Boric.

THE defense of democracy This will therefore be, according to government sources, one of the axes of the agenda of the head of the executive in New York, alongside the commitment to peace in the midst of conflicts such as those in Ukraine and the Middle East, and sustainable development.

This will be the first time he will speak before the United Nations General Assembly after Spain recognized Palestine as a state, and he will call on the international community to be consistent with what he considers obvious: the only solution to the conflict is the coexistence of two states, Israel and Palestine, coexisting in peace and security.

In the middle of the Escalation of tensions in the Middle Eastwith the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, should start again a call for confinement.

Sánchez will participate on Tuesday in an economic forum with special attention to Latin America (where he will highlight the progress of the Spanish economy) in addition to co-chairing with Lula the event in defense of democracies.

He will also attend a dinner organized by UN Women and, more specifically, the “He For She” initiative, which, on the occasion of its tenth anniversary, has distinguished him for his commitment to equality and which will recognize him at an event in which the actress and ambassador of the United Nations organization Anne Hathaway will act as moderator.

On Wednesday, in addition to addressing the Assembly, Sánchez will attend a meeting of the leaders of the Socialist International (the organization he chairs) and participate in a public session of the UN Security Council convened by the Slovenian presidency on leadership for peace.
