German Foreign Minister Bärbock announced divorce after 17 years of marriage

The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Bärbock, and her husband, Daniel Holefleisch, have started divorce proceedings, reports the Bild newspaper. Their joint statement, cited by the publication, says the decision was made some time ago.

“To avoid possible speculation: we do not have new partners. The most important thing for us remains to ensure that our two daughters can grow up in peace and love.” – said Berbock and Holefleisch and added that they will continue to live in their common home in Potsdam.

The politician and her husband did not specify the reasons for the divorce and asked for respect for their privacy.

Baerbock and Holefleisch met about 20 years ago and began dating when they were both members of the Green Party. In 2007 they got married. The couple has two daughters, they are nine and 13 years old.

Holefleisch worked at the postal company Deutsche Post DHL, but in 2021, when Bärbock became head of the German Foreign Ministry, he decided to leave his position so that his wife could focus on her career. He then became a public relations consultant.

Bärbock is the first woman to head the German Foreign Ministry. In 2005 she joined the Green Party and began working as an advisor to a member of the European Parliament. In 2013 she became a member of the Bundestag and in January 2018 she became co-president of the Greens, RBC clarifies.
