Moldova’s prosecutor’s office concludes case of illegal financing of opposition

Investigations into the illegal financing of some political parties are continuing and one of the criminal cases, involving 56 people, is about to be concluded, Moldova’s Attorney General Ion Munteanu said on TV8.

According to him, the prosecutor’s office has another case involving more than 80 people. He pointed out that as the investigation progressed, the way in which money enters the country has also changed.

“The 56 defendants in one case will be distributed across other similar criminal cases, with a smaller number of defendants. This is necessary, among other things, to speed up the judicial proceedings. It is absurd to bring a case against 56 defendants before a court. We can say with confidence that this judicial investigation will have no end.” – said Munteanu.

Prosecutors are currently reviewing the evidence of each defendant. Munteanu clarified that at this point it is too early to talk about the distribution of the defendants in less significant cases, as the crime related to the illegal receipt of money to finance parties has not been fully disclosed.

“We cannot be distracted by a less important matter or by a person who plays a minor role in the plan. At the same time, the evidence gathered may indicate that through this person it is possible to reach a more important one.” – explained the Attorney General.

He added that as the investigation progressed, the methods of illegally importing money into the republic also changed. If at first the money was brought in bags, now it is transferred electronically, including through banks in Transnistria.

“Not all money transfers are suspicious. It happens that we pay attention to transfers that are related to illegal party financing, but originate from EU countries.” – concluded Ion Munteanu.

According to the prosecution, investigations into cases of illegal financing of political parties are continuing. Dozens of searches have been carried out and millions of lei have been seized, and the perpetrators are often members of territorial organisations affiliated with parties who receive remuneration from hidden sources for political activities and organisation of protests.

It should be recalled that the parties associated with the bloc are accused of illegally financing political activities. Ilana Shora “Victory”. Among other things, the vice-president of the association, the MP, is accused in a similar case initiated earlier. Marina Tauber and chief (bashkan) of Gagauzia Evgenia Gutsul.
