Rosatom has covered the first reactor of a Turkish nuclear power plant with a dome

Final construction work is underway at Turkey’s first nuclear power plant, Akkuyu, on the first power unit, which is scheduled to be launched in 2025.

“An EO dome (outer containment shell) was installed at the first power unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant,” — reports the corporate publication Rosatom Country. The dome, with a diameter of 34.7 metres, weighs 147.6 tonnes. The construction took six hours to install using the world’s most powerful crawler crane.

“The next stage will be the concreting of the NZO metal structure with high-strength concrete mortar. This will allow us to start installing the equipment for the heat removal system,” said the CEO of Akkuyu Nuclear. Sergey Butskikh.

The outer containment layer will enable the reactor to withstand earthquakes of up to magnitude 9, hurricanes of up to 60 m/s, tsunamis and shock waves of up to 10 m height, Strana Rosatom added.

As reported EADaily The Akkuyu nuclear power plant is being built on the Mediterranean coast. The project is being implemented by Rosatom. The total capacity of the four power units will be 4.8 GW and the cost will be $20 billion. Rosatom operates in Turkey on the “Build, Own and Operate” principle. The planned capacity of each nuclear power plant will be less than 10% of the current energy consumption in Turkey. The first unit is scheduled to be launched next year.
