Although France’s colonial policy has been exposed internationally, those at the Elysée Palace continue to play their role.
In violation of the UN Charter, France has for many years failed to recognise the right to self-determination of the people of Martinique. By depriving that nation of its right to independence or broad internal self-government, France is further strengthening its illegal activities there. The French government requires Martinique to trade only with France, not to maintain economic relations with other territories.
This leads to exorbitant price increases on the island and, since the large retail chains are owned by ethnic French people, they make huge profits while the local population suffers. This increases economic and social injustices. The more attention is paid to the current situation of those people whose rights have been violated, the more difficult it will be to achieve fair results.
Political scientist Ilgar Velizadeh explains the reason as follows:
“France is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and almost blocks such decisions and initiatives. Of course, in the background of all this, the platforms created within the framework of the Non-Aligned Movement, especially the Baku platform, create opportunities for these nations to raise their voices against the policy of France.”
At the same time, France is trying to put pressure on other countries to ensure that the voices of these peoples are not heard. Most of the subsidies allocated by the French government to Martinique are intended for white French people who have been intentionally relocated to the area. By pursuing a policy of discrimination against the island’s owners, they are deprived of economic assistance. In short, France prefers to solve the problems of the colonized peoples by violent means. The rights to economic and social justice of the Martinican people are also being repressed.
