The 5 best paid sectors in Spain

The profession with the highest average annual salary in Spain was that related to Supply of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning with 55,470.69 euros per worker. This figure was 105.8% higher than the national average. This is reflected in the latest report of the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on the “Survey on the Structure of Wages 2022”, which includes both the average salary in Spain and the average earnings by sectors and positions, and by gender.

The second highest paying occupation was Financial and insurance activitieswith 47,239.53 euros, in addition to that of Information and communicationswhich amounted to an average of 37,438.55 euros.

Furthermore, professions related to Extractive industries (36,308.58), the Professional activities (30,947.87), the Water supply (30,444.93) and the Manufacturing industry (30,000.69) had an average annual salary quite similar to the Spanish average, of 26,948.87 euros.

The lowest paid sectors

On the other hand, the occupations with the lowest salaries were Hospitality and Other Services, with 16,274.71 and 18,269.96 euros respectively. These figures were 39.6% and 32.2% lower than the average. In 2022, the average annual salary was 26,948.87 euros per worker, 4.1% more than the previous year.

Men earned more than women

A relevant fact is that, although the average annual salary is 26,948.87 euros, men earned more than women. While the average annual salary for women was 24,359.82 eurosthat of men was 29,381.84.

By gender, occupations related to the supply of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning were the highest paid activities for both men and women. In contrast, the hospitality sector had the lowest rates for both sexes.

It should be noted that in all economic activities in which the female representation in the sample is significant, women had a lower salary than men.

While the average salary of men increased by 3.5% to 29,381.84 euros, that of women increased by 5.1% to 24,359.82 euros. The average salary of women was therefore 82.9% of that of men.

However, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) specifies that this difference must be taken into account in relation to other work variables (type of contract, working hours, profession, seniority, etc.) which have a significant impact on salary.

In only two sectors do they receive a higher amount than them

It is worth noting that, although on average the average salary of women is lower than that of men, there are two professions in which they earn more money. In ConstructionFor example, women earn on average around 26,258.91 euros while men earn 25,001.32 euros.

The same thing happens with the Extractive industries. In this profession, men earn almost 8,000 euros less than women. While they have an average salary of 42,851.51, theirs, on the other hand, is 35,064.02.

Although men generally earn more than women, in many professions men and women have relatively similar salaries, with a difference of around 2,000 or 6,000 euros per year.

The differences between the sexes in professions such as water supply, trade, transport and storage, hospitality, artistic activities or public administration are small. In artistic activities, for example, women earn an average of 17,268.37 euros per year while men earn 20,892.08. In Public Administration, the difference is also similar: while the average salary for women is 32,272.17 euros, that of men is 35,813.05 euros.

Men working in financial services earn 10,000 euros more than women

In other professions, however, the gender pay gap is much larger. The average salary in the Foodwhere men win almost every year 10,000 euros more than them on average. The salary of women who exercise this profession is 49,546.23 euros and theirs is 57,488.36 euros.

It is also worth noting the difference in average salary between Financial activities. There, men earn an average of 53,969.55 euros per year. Their salary, however, is reduced to 42,214.85 euros.

Furthermore, in the Health activitiesMen earn on average around 9,000 euros more than women; just like in the Professional activitieswhere they have an average annual salary of 10,000 euros more than working women.
