The Martinique prefecture announced in a press release on Monday 23 September that it was extending the partial curfew until Thursday. It will be extended to the working-class district of Sainte-Thérèse in Fort-de-France. The curfew has been in force since 18 September, following the violence that accompanied a protest movement against the high cost of living in this French department in the Caribbean.
“This temporary relative ban” Travel will be in effect from 9.30pm to 5am in certain districts of Fort-de-France and the neighbouring municipality of Lamentin, from Monday to Thursday morning.
The prefect justifies the extension of the curfew to the Sainte-Thérèse district, which has become the epicentre of the riots, by his own will “support the return to calm and tranquility in the sector.” He adds that “Security forces will be intensively mobilized to ensure the safety of people and property.”
