less PSOE and more technicians and academics

Pedro Sanchez Today he will take a new step in his transformation operation at the beginning of his political career. The Council of Ministers will continue today with appointments that bring a radical change to his closest cabinet, the team with which he works daily at Moncloa.

It will go from a very political Cabinet with former prominent leaders of the PSOE to a much more technical cabinet, characterized above all by being a team closely linked to the University and with academic experience outside Spain. Until now, this cabinet was led by militant politicians and now they will be university technicians, mostly independent. From political practice to theory, without transition.

They go out Oscar Lopezformer head of the PSOE organization, recently moved from chief of staff to Minister of Digital Transformation, and his number two at Moncloa and former parliamentary spokesperson of the PSOE, Antonio Hernandowho will be appointed today as Secretary of State in this department.

Instead, it remains Diego Rubio as head of the Cabinet, surrounded by university professors who, in some cases, were already there and are now promoted with the departure of politicians and, in addition, other signatures like Jose Pablo FerrandizIice Doctor in Political Science and Sociology, Doctor in Government and Public Administration from the Complutense University of Madrid and professor at the Carlos III University.

He is Director of Public Opinion and Political Studies at Ipsos Spain, previously Founder and Director of Elemental Research and before that Senior Researcher at Metroscopia.

Diego Rubio himself is a graduate in history, with an extensive academic background in various international universities, such as Oxford, Columbia and the Sorbonne, among others.

He is part of this team with increasing responsibilities. Jose Fernandez Albertoswith a long academic career as a doctober in Political Science from Harvard University (2007), Master’s (2002) and PhD (2007) from the Center for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences of the Juan March Institute, and Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Administration (1998) and Diploma in Advanced Studies (2002) from the Complutense University of Madrid.

Program and strategy

It is the same case of Jose Rama Caamañowho was until now Rubio’s number two as secretary general for public policies, European affairs and strategic foresight, and who will now become one of the fundamental pieces of the government.

Rama is a professor of political science at the Autonomous University of Madrid (Department of Political Science and International Relations) and also has experience in international universities.

Moncloa sources explain that it is about structuring the new Cabinet with three fundamental pillars: public policies, strategy and international. The chief of staff of the President of the Government is one of the most important positions in the executive, since it controls the agenda, strategy and execution of the decisions of the head of Moncloa.

Sánchez, according to these sources, intends to close the changes in the three circles of his team until the end of November: first his Moncloa cabinet; then his government with the departure of José Luis Escriva and his replacement by Óscar López and soon that of Teresa Ribera, with the possibility of other changes; and, finally, in the PSOE at the Congress that the party will hold on November 29 and 30 and December 1 in Seville.
