Argentine court places Venezuelan president on international wanted list

A court in the Argentine capital has decided to add Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to the international list of people wanted on charges of human rights violations, according to the newspaper La Nación on September 23.

“Today, a federal court ordered a federal judge Sebastian Ramos request the international arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to investigate his human rights abuses in Argentina,” – says the publication.

The court members made a satisfactory decision at the request of Argentine prosecutors, who had previously received a complaint from the non-governmental organization Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy, which accused Maduro of allegedly committing crimes against humanity.

These charges, according to the court, fall under universal jurisdiction, so the Argentine court has the power to include the Venezuelan leader on the international wanted list.

“It is necessary to order the immediate arrest through Interpol of Nicolás Maduro Moros and (the head of the Ministry of the Interior of Venezuela) Diosdado Cabello for the purposes of his extradition to Argentina,” — the publication quotes an excerpt from the judges’ ruling.

The same should also apply to “the structures of the intervening command bodies that have been identified or those that have not yet been identified,” the court ruled.

Earlier on September 19, the European Parliament called on the EU to issue an arrest warrant against Maduro for alleged crimes against humanity based on serious human rights violations. The European Parliament also demanded that the Venezuelan opposition leader be recognized as head of state. Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.

Prior to this, on September 6, Argentina also requested the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant against Maduro for “crimes against humanity.” Then, on September 18, the Attorney General of Venezuela Tarek William Saab announced the issuance of an arrest warrant against the president of Argentina JavierMileyhis sister, general secretary of the presidential administration karina mileyand the Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich in the case of the theft of an Emtrasur airline plane used by Maduro.

On July 28, presidential elections were held in Venezuela, in which Maduro won with 51.2% of the votes. Speaking to supporters outside the presidential palace, Maduro said that his success is a “triumph of peace and stability” and shows that Venezuela’s electoral system is “transparent,” Izvestia recalls.
