The new television season has been marked by some old stories, such as the usual lack of racial diversity on Spanish television and with the rivalry between “El Hormiguero” and “La Revuelta” as the highlight of the year. In the days leading up to the premiere of David Broncano’s program, the team insisted that the format would be the same as usual, and it was, but in the second program there was a change when a third was added to the two classic questions about money and relationships: Are you more sexist or more racist?
I like the question for several reasons. It assumes the reality that we all reproduce racism and machismo, it encourages getting wet and can also open the door to reflections that, according to the interviewee, can be important on public television that, even in the purest entertainment, has a role to play in improving society, including in terms of the racialized and migrant population always forgotten in Spain.
