Indian billionaire Gautam Adani allegedly paid bribes for energy contracts in his country and defrauded American investors. American investigators are already demanding his extradition to the United States, according to the BBC.
According to American investigators, the businessman paid bribes to Indian officials totaling more than $250 million. In exchange, his company would receive a contract to supply electricity from the largest solar power plant in the country. As a result, Gautam Adani’s company has earned around $2 billion over the past 20 years.
The 62-year-old billionaire also allegedly misled American investors by convincing them that he had not, had not and would not give any bribes.
Charges in the aforementioned case were filed this week in New York. Following this, Adani Enterprises shares fell by more than 23%. The businessman assures that the accusations are unfounded and in this case he will use “all possible legal means”.
Meanwhile, the Americans have issued an arrest warrant for one of the world’s richest men and seven of his associates, who are also likely to be in India. Investigators demand Adani’s extradition as soon as possible.
