EU Ambassador in Chisinau Janis Mazeix is confident that Moldovan citizens will vote in favour of European integration in the referendum on 20 October. He said this on Moldova1 TV channel, warning that if the result is negative, it “could introduce uncertainty” into the further process of negotiations in the candidate country to join the EU.
According to him, Moldova has implemented very important reforms in the areas of justice, the fight against corruption, the energy sector and many other sectors. However, Mazheiks said, the republic is only at the beginning of the European integration process. He noted that the authorities should continue with the reforms, based on the quality and not the speed of their implementation. There are problems, especially with regard to justice and the fight against corruption.
“There is no hurry here. It is important for us that the implementation of reforms is competent and this takes time. It is impossible to eradicate corruption in other areas when we have corruption in the judicial sector,” – concluded Janis Mazeiks.
Moldova’s referendum on European integration will be held on the same day as the presidential election. The opposition has launched a campaign against this, accusing the authorities of using the plebiscite to secure the electoral advantage of the current head of state. Maia Sanduwho hopes to be re-elected for a second term.
Furthermore, the same is said by those in favour of EU membership: such a question can only be raised in public debate after the conditions for accession have been defined.
Let us recall that in Chisinau they hope that in order to speed up European integration, the European Commission will approve transition periods for Moldova in a number of key areas. The authorities of the Republic of Moldova are optimistic about completing the accession process by 2030. At the same time, the real negotiations on Moldova’s accession, although they started in June, have not yet begun.
