World must ‘stop arming the generals’ in Sudan, Joe Biden urges at UN

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday, September 24, urged world leaders gathered at the UN General Assembly to “stop arming” Sudanese generals, whom he calls on to put an end to a war that has ravaged this African country for more than a year.

“The world must (…) Speak with one voice and tell them to stop destroying your country, to stop blocking aid to the Sudanese people, to end this war now. »The 81-year-old US leader, whose last appearance as president was at the United Nations in New York, insisted that he will not run in the presidential elections on November 5.

Since April 2023, a war has been raging between the army, led by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhane, and the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of his former deputy, General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo. The fighting has left tens of thousands dead, more than 10 million displaced and some 26 million people facing severe food insecurity, according to the UN.

“Brutal struggle for power”

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres denounces the “brutal struggle for power” between the two generals, also punished “external powers” WHO “Continuing to interfere without any unified approach to finding peace”. While neither Joe Biden nor Antonio Guterres have singled out any country, the United Arab Emirates has been blamed, in particular by UN experts.

In their annual report published in January, the UN Security Council’s tasked experts with monitoring the sanctions regime against Darfur denounced violations of the arms embargo, accusing several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, of sending weapons to the FSR. These accusations have been the subject of several arms exchanges in recent months at the Security Council between Sudanese and Emirati representatives.

Sudanese ambassador to the UN, Al-Harith Idriss Al-Harith Mohamed, in particular accused Abu Dhabi of being responsible for the continuation of the war, a systematic accusation flatly rejected by his Emirati counterpart, Mohamed Issa Hamad Abushahab, who recently described a “Cynical attempt to divert attention from the weaknesses of the Sudanese armed forces”.

For its part, the African Union (AU) called “immediate cessation” fighting in the large Sudanese city of El-Facher, in the southwest of the country, denouncing a “escalation” from the crisis following an assault this weekend by paramilitary forces.
