Mukhtar Babayev spoke at the “World Summit on Renewable Energy”.

COP29 President-designate Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev spoke at the “Global Summit on Renewable Energy” held within the High-Level Week of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly.

The report said that in his speech he stressed that Azerbaijan’s agenda for action at COP29 pays great attention to energy and that in connection with the decisions taken at COP28 in Dubai, several projects are being prepared:

“The UAE Consensus at COP28 was an important achievement and laid a solid foundation for us. We must work together to create the renewable energy systems of the future to meet the challenges of energy transitions in a fair and orderly manner.”

The Minister informed the guests about the initiatives presented by Azerbaijan in relation to the transition to renewable energy within the framework of COP29:

“Under the Global Grid and Energy Storage Commitment initiated by Azerbaijan, the main goal is to increase the global energy storage potential sixfold compared to 2022 and reach 1,500 gigawatts by 2030. The parties making the commitment, within the framework of global efforts to upgrade energy networks, will add more than 80 million kilometers of power grid to the overall grid system by 2040, which will increase the flow of investment in this area.

The COP29 Commitment on Green Energy Zones and Corridors, of which we are initiators, will have objectives related to promoting investments, stimulating economic growth, development, modernization and expansion of infrastructure, as well as promoting regional cooperation.

Mr. Babayev called on international energy agencies and global partners, noting that COP29 is a critical moment to translate global goals into national action plans.
