Sigüenza is strategically located in the upper valley of the Henares River, a place that has had a important defensive role since the Middle Ages. It is believed that its original habitat was located on the hill of Mirón, where remains from the Iron Age have been discovered. The city was an important Celtiberian enclave mentioned by Pliny the Elder, and its Roman occupation consolidated its relevance by establishing a road linking Mérida to Zaragoza. During Visigothic Hispania it became an episcopal seat and its development continued under Muslim rule, although it lost importance compared to other nearby cities.
