Two decades have passed since, in this country, after the approval of the law on comprehensive protection measures against gender violence, we became socially aware of the violence carried out against women, with sexist killings as an expression of maximum pain. step by which, collectively, we decided that gender violence was not a domestic problem but a social problem, that the aggressors deserved only the strongest rejection and that public authorities must promote all the necessary policies to fight against this serious social problem, by accompanying and supporting the victims at all times, this country has continued to take firm measures in the fight against this violence, reaching important consensuses and providing us with tools to combat it. And it should fill us with pride to think that years ago, in 2001, Castilla-La Mancha already approved, in a pioneering way, the law on prevention of abuse and protection of battered women. We also took a further step in 2018, with the Law for a Society Free from Gender Violence, in which we not only expanded the concept of violence, including issues such as trafficking for sexual exploitation or genital mutilation, but we have also recognized the rights of minors of murdered mothers as victims of gender-based violence, in accordance with the agreements of the Istanbul Convention. Over these two decades, we have generated all kinds of data and statistics regarding gender violence. Truly frightening figures, like this: during all this time, while another possible case is being investigated in the province of Seville, 1,285 women have been murdered, as well as 61 minors whose lives have been kidnapped to irreparably harm their mother. Or that, over the last fifteen years, nearly two and a half million complaints have been filed. The coldness of the figures cannot make us forget that behind them lie the lives, freedom and dignity of women who suffer violence, but they are necessary. figures to understand the extent of the problem and make us aware that this situation must end.
