Boeing gives striking union more time to vote on latest contract offer

The American multinational Boeing extended the deadline for the union to respond to a new contract offer, after union leaders refused to schedule a vote, it was reported Bloomberg.

The airline had said the offer would only be on the table until midnight on September 27, but workers, who went on strike after rejecting a deal between the company and unions, were not convinced by the proposal, which envisages a 30% pay rise over four years.

This offer improves the previous rejected one by 25% and also offers a bonus of 6,000 dollars (about 5,358 euros) to workers for ratifying this proposal for a new collective agreement and other benefits such as the restoration of annual bonuses.

However, The union and some of its members have complained that Boeing bypassed the union by making its proposal public, claiming it was an attempt by the company to make them appear greedy.

In a statement reported by national media, Boeing stressed that it still hoped there would be a vote and assured that the strike was affecting its team and its communities.

“We believe our employees should have the opportunity to vote on our offer, which provides significant improvements in wages and benefits,” the statement said.

It is good to remember that Workers began a strike on Friday, September 13, the first in 16 years at Boeing, after rejecting the agreement between the unions and the manufacturer, which they considered insufficient.

Bank of America estimated that the strike would cost Boeing about $50 million a day, adding to the crisis of confidence following the incidents of the 737 Max model and the changes at the top of the multinational.

The striking districts represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union include more than 30,000 Boeing employees.
