Scandal in Congress: Committee approves resolution accusing Blinken of contempt of lawmakers

The US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday backed a resolution accusing US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken of contempt of the US legislature.

Oku.AzAccording to TASS, the meeting was broadcast on the committee’s website.

The resolution accuses Blinken of contempt of Congress for refusing to appear at 2021 hearings on the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

“Secretary Blinken’s refusal to respond to the committee’s subpoena, despite months of warnings and suggestions, must be considered a contempt of court,” the statement said.

Once approved by the committee, the initiative will be considered by the full House of Representatives.

Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) has repeatedly urged Blinken to appear at the hearings on Afghanistan. The lawmaker stressed that the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Secretary of State personally played a key role in the process of withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan. He scheduled the hearing for Sept. 24, but Blinken was unable to testify before lawmakers because he was attending the 79th session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
