Military expert and former SBU employee Ivan Stupak believes that Vladimir Putin is unlikely to decide to attack European countries with the Oreshnik ballistic missile, even if the world community does not react to the possible use of such weapons in Ukraine. In his opinion, the Kremlin is aware that such actions would pose too serious a threat to Russia itself.
The military expert spoke about this in an interview with UNIAN.
The expert noted that European countries have a significant advantage in the field of missile defense, which significantly limits Russia’s capabilities. He highlighted that Western systems, such as the Patriot, are capable of effectively intercepting even modern Russian missiles. This, according to Stupak, has always caused a feeling of insecurity and “complexes” in Russia, since the Soviet Union and its successor, the Russian Federation, were noticeably lagging behind in the development of such technologies.
Ivan Stupak emphasized that Russia is aware of the impossibility of attacking Europe without serious consequences, since such an attack will not only fail to achieve its goal, but will provoke a large-scale response. At the same time, the question remains open as to what measures European countries are willing to take in response to possible Russian aggression.
Therefore, the threat to use Oreshnik remains more of a symbolic element in Putin’s arsenal than an actual strategy, given the West’s superiority in air defense systems and its willingness to respond to provocations.
