ICC arrest warrant ‘not enough’

The supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khameneiraised the tone of his remarks against Israel this Monday by assuring Whatand should be sentenced to death to the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahusince he considers that “the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the president a few days ago.

“A death sentence must be handed down to Netanyahu and the criminal leaders of this regime (Israel),” Khamenei said in a meeting with basijis -Islamic militia- in Tehran.

Iran’s highest political and religious authority has once again accused Israel of committing “war crimes” in Gaza and Lebanon with attacks against civilians.

Khamenei said his staunch enemy was not winning the conflict against his regional allies, such as the Palestinian Hamas and the Lebanese Hezbollah militias. “The bombing of civilian homes is not a victory. The enemy has not won in Gaza or Lebanon, and he will not win either“, he assured.

The ICC last week issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip. A decision which was then celebrated by the Iranian political and military authorities.

“The verdict of the International Criminal Court is a victory for the Palestinian and Lebanese people“, said the commander-in-chief of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, General Hossein Salami, last Friday.

The Iranian authorities have not commented on the ICC arrest warrant against Mohamed Deif, against the military leader of Hamas, one of their allies.

The ICC does not have a police force to arrest suspects, but its 125 member states, including the United Kingdom and European Union countries, have an obligation to cooperate with the court. Neither the United States nor Israel is part of this tribunal.
