This ideal situation for studying is far from the norm. A quarter of those enrolled in higher education have a job unrelated to their training, according to the National Observatory of Student Life. Among these activities, the most common are sales or cashier jobs in commerce or distribution (21%), but also waiter, cook, receptionist or janitor (19%), as well as childcare (18%).

However, these student jobs can have a detrimental effect on success. “From eleven hours of work per week we can observe negative consequences in training”explains François Giret, director general of the Centre for Studies and Research on Qualifications. The positions offered are diverse, and not all correspond to the same profiles. In libraries, in order to provide tutoring or support to students with disabilities, the qualification requirements and schedules are different. Certain administrative positions, which do not require specific diplomas, are only necessary, for example, in the months when applications arrive at universities. In addition, many of these jobs correspond to vacation contracts, whose first payment does not fall immediately after the first month of work.
