Javier Gómez Noya announces his retirement

A legend of Spanish sport retires. Javier Gomez Noya announced this Wednesday his decision to stop competing after a successful 26-year career.

The triathlete touched the sky while crowning himself five times world champion, four times European champion andsilver at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“While it’s never an easy decision, I know it’s the right thing to do. I love our sport and I love training every day, but my body struggles to cope with the amount of load required to compete at the highest level. My body has been pushed to the limit for many years and I’ve had a career that I never could have imagined in my wildest dreams, but I think it’s time to take a step back,” he said.

Gómez Noya was due to take part this weekend in the fifth stage of the “100 Triathlon World Tour”, but decided to withdraw because he was not in optimal condition.

“I tried to prepare myself as best I could to be at my best for these events. But the reality is that I didn’t manage it, for one reason or another. I got sick just before Miami, my mother died when I was already in Singapore, among various injuries that didn’t allow me to run in London or perform well in San Francisco… I gave it my all but it just didn’t work outSo it’s time to take a step back and simplify things,” he added.
