In Spain there are countless people who, for “x” reasons, they do not use their vehicle and they make him stop or park on any street or parking lot in the city. For this reason, many choose to temporarily deregister the vehicle and thus save a few euros, since they are exempt from paying some of the mandatory taxes for the car to travel correctly on the roads of our country.
Temporarily deregister a car online
To temporarily deregister a car in Spain, you can do so via the website of General Directorate of Trafficand thus avoid going to the office in person. As the name suggests, this process is called ‘temporary removal of the vehicle’ and allows you to suspend the use of the vehicle without losing ownership. Next, we will explain the steps to follow.
- Access the DGT website: First of all, you must visit the official website of the General Directorate of Traffic (
- Digital identification: once inside, and to be able to carry out the online procedure without problem, you will need to identify yourself using several options: digital certificate, electronic identification, PIN code (if registered) or from the Authentication system with username and password.
- Select the temporary withdrawal procedure: after identification, look for the option ‘Temporary deregistration of the vehicle’. This is usually found in the “Procedures and Procedures” section, or directly in the search engine, that is, in the magnifying glass which is usually in the upper right corner.
- Enter vehicle details: You will be asked to enter the details of the car you wish to temporarily write off. It is important to verify that all information is correct.
- Confirm the procedure: After entering the data, you will be presented with a summary of the procedure. If everything is correct, you must confirm the temporary withdrawal.
- Receive confirmation: Finally, you will receive a confirmation of the temporary withdrawal in your email, which will be valid until the time you requested.
On the other hand, it should be noted that temporary deregistration has no cost, but it must be borne in mind that the vehicle will not be able to circulate during the period of its deregistration. Likewise, it can last a maximum of 1 year. If after this period you wish to keep it on “standby”, you must renew it. In addition, road taxes will not be paidbut the car will continue to appear in your name, so if you do not collect it from the General Directorate of Traffic, you could continue to receive sanctions for not having written it off.
How to temporarily deregister a car in Traffic
If you prefer to complete the process of temporarily deregistering a car in person at Traffic, the process is quite simple and only requires following a few steps to do it correctly. Before going to Traffic Headquarters, You must ensure that you have the required documentation: DNI, driving license, car registration number and certificate of being up to date with road tax payment.
The second step is to go to the nearest traffic headquarters. It must be taken into account that some, if not all, of them require an appointment, so it is advisable to request one. Afterwards, We will request the temporary withdrawal form. It will be available at public service counters or you can obtain it from information offices.
Following, we will fill out the form with all the requested data: important to check them. Once the documentation is completed, we will present the aforementioned documentation and, if everything is correct, we will receive a receipt certifying that the vehicle has been temporarily written off. This receipt will serve as proof that the car is not on the road and you will not be required to pay road tax during this period.
On the other hand, it is important to emphasize that, during the period of deregistration of the vehicle, cannot under any circumstances circulate. If the car is on the road, you will need to re-register it before you can use it, otherwise you may receive a fine of 200 eurosin addition to the total immobilization of the vehicle.
In some cases you can even lose points driving license if the offense is considered serious. Although this is not always enforced, it could be a possibility, depending on the situation and the officers’ interpretation of the regulations.
