The rector of the Pontificia of Salamanca considers the race to implement degrees and faculties as a “mistake”

In the context of the possible award of the medical degree in the universities of León and Burgos, the rector of the Pontifical University of Salamanca, Santiago García-Jalón de la Lama, considered this Wednesday a “mistake” in the race to implement new diplomas and faculties. In this sense, García-Jalón stressed that “That doesn’t seem very coherent” that, “at a time when public universities complain about lack of funding, their degrees are expanded when it requires teachers, facilities and students.”

The academic president of Upsa said, in statements collected by Ical before the academic opening ceremony of the course, that “the more supply there is, on the one hand, there is competition for the same market, and that always makes things difficult”, but also, stimulates to do better and better and to open up to new markets that do not constrain compete for everyone for the same group of students.

He instead referred to the new degrees that the Pontifical University of Salamanca is implementing. “The first one being processed is the ‘online’ history degree, which could be implemented next year. This year, dietetics and nutrition have started and we are considering different possibilities, but I insist, we do not want to start an academic career either,” he said. He also said that the Medicine project for the Madrid campus “It is subordinate to the search for a strategic ally that will allow it to move forward.”

The rector, who acknowledged negotiating “for a year” to open a headquarters in Zamora, also celebrated the increase in the number of first-year students, which stands at seven percent and six percent in the total number of university degrees, of 4,500 students. The challenge is to reach 7,000 students in the medium term, but without going much further. “The great universities are not necessarily the great universities, but those in which there is a balance,” he said.

During the meeting with the media, which took place in the cloister in front of the Aula Magna, there was also time for greetings and thanks from the Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical University, the Bishop of Salamanca and Ciudad Rodrigo, José Luis Retana, and from the President of the Pontifical Episcopal Conference, Luis Argüello.
