The president of the Junta de Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, praised this Tuesday “the quality” of journalism carried out in Castilla y León during his closing speech of the Francisco de Cossío Awards, which reward the best journalistic work in the Community over the last year.
Among them, Eduardo Margareto, Miriam Chacón and Juan López, from the ICAL Agency, for their report “Sentinels in adversity” in the digital category; that of José Vicente López for the image “Conquered Fire” in photography; that of Javier Hernández, of La Gaceta de Salamanca, for “La hija de la UCI” in the press; the documentary “100 years of football in Castilla y León” directed by Diego Espinilla and Fernando Riera for La 7 of RTVCyL; and the work of Helena Cerveto and Sara Uña, “Drought and transhumance”, broadcast on the “Más cerca” space on Radio 5.
In his speech, Mañueco praised the journey of all the winners of the thirty-eighth edition of these awards, who represent “the best example” of communication professionals in Castilla y León. “They practice journalism that gives us the truth when so much misinformation harasses us.” “More than ever, we need serious, analytical, thoughtful and rigorous journalism” which, in the opinion of the President of the Council, “allows us to distinguish the transcendent from the insignificant.”
Mañueco also stressed that independent, free and plural media are “essential” for the defense of democracy and the rule of law, and assured that in Castilla y León “the exercise of “free journalism, objective, rigorous and professional.
In addition, the Chairman of the Board of Directors also had words for the Cossío Prize for Professional Career, awarded this year to Luis Jaramillowhom Mañueco thanked for his work, being “the voice and reference of the best journalism” and participating in the construction of Castilla y León “from the origins”.
For his part, Jaramillo, who also described this year’s winners as “the best example of good journalism carried out in Castile and León”, pleaded for his love for radio and for the defense of camaraderie in the profession: ” This is the reward of all those who accompanied me, because you are the people around you.

Previously, the winners of this XXXVIII edition of the Cossío Awards took to the stage of the Miguel Delibes Cultural Center, whose jury rewarded, in digital form, the work carried out by Eduardo Margareto, Miriam Chacón and Juan López, from ICAL Agencyin the report “Sentinels in adversity”, dedicated to the daily work of the V Battalion of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) located in Ferral de Bernesga, in the province of León.

He also presented the award to his colleagues at the agency and their commitment to “quality photography that reflects the reality of the Community”, and thanked God for his healing from a serious illness that led to advising the public: “Enjoy life. “
In the press category, the prize was awarded to Javier Hernández, from La Gaceta de Salamanca, for his report “The daughter of the UCI”. Hernández thanked the professionals of the Salamanca ICU for their work since “this award recognizes them”, because “public health is good” and full of “humanity”. “Long live public health and our public health of Castilla y León,” he proclaimed.
In the television category, the winners were Diego Espinilla and Fernando Riera for his documentary “100 years of football in Castilla y León”, broadcast by La 7 of RTVCyL.
