Biden assures that the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon is intended as “a permanent cessation of hostilities”

United States President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that the governments of Israel and Lebanon have accepted the US proposal for a 60-day ceasefire in Lebanon to end hostilities between the Israeli army and the Lebanese Shiite militia of Hezbollah.

“I am happy to announce that Their governments accepted the United States proposal end the devastating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah,” he said in a speech, also thanking French President Emmanuel Macron for his “collaboration” in reaching the agreement between the parties.

Biden noted that the plan is designed to be “a definitive cessation of hostilities”. “The Lebanese army and state security forces will deploy and take control of their own territory,” he explained. “No American troops will be deployed to southern Lebanon. This is consistent with my commitment to the American people not to send American troops into combat in this conflict,” the president stressed.
