Russia increases attacks until Ukrainian airspace is saturated

Never before has the Russian military fired so many long-range drones against Ukraine. In the early hours of Tuesday, November 26, 188 Shahed-type drones (Iranian name) and four Iskander-M ballistic missiles attacked Ukrainian territory, which constitutes a new record in a thousand days of war, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

The 192 projectiles were fired from the Russian regions of Voronezh, Oryol, Kursk and Krasnodar, bordering Ukraine. According to the same source, Ukrainian air defense units managed to shoot down 76 drones by kinetic means (fighter aircraft, helicopters, mobile anti-aircraft batteries, surface-to-air missiles) and by electronic jammers. In addition, another 95 Russian drones were allegedly diverted from their targets using a satellite coordinate spoofing system, used by drones and missiles to guide themselves in airspace.

According to information provided by Ukrainian military authorities, which is impossible to independently verify, only 17 of 188 Russian drones managed to penetrate Ukraine’s air defense. That’s an efficiency rate of around 90%. However, none of the four Iskander-M ballistic missiles were shot down. Unlike attack drones of the Shahed type, which fly at very low altitude to escape radars, ballistic missiles fly at very high altitude and are clearly visible, but extremely difficult to intercept.

According to Ukrainian media, the attack damaged private buildings and apartment buildings in several regions, including kyiv. In Ternopil, western Ukraine, electrical infrastructure was affected, causing power outages across the region. The authorities do not report any victims or injuries after these attacks.

In its daily bulletin, the Russian Defense Ministry confirms an airstrike in vague terms, using “attack drones” against “military airfield infrastructure”other military objectives in “135 zones”.

Night (and sometimes daytime) attacks by Shahed-type drones have become commonplace in recent months, with waves of fire from several dozen units. “The Russians are having difficulty increasing ballistic missile production, which is stagnating at about ten units a month. They manufacture between 30 and 35 cruise missiles a month. On the other hand, the production rate of Shahed-type drones has increased considerably: it already exceeds a thousand units per month. underlines Ukrainian military analyst Evhen Diki.
