Ismael Barrios: The tireless Esteban Paños

“He did not feel comfortable in the internal dynamics of political organizations and on the contrary he appreciated everything that the street offered him”

I am convinced that the cancer that took Esteban Paños makes him sorry for having won the battle against a great fighter for life and for the improvement of the lives of others.

As a journalist, I witnessed his effort, his tenacity, his constant desire to advance his ideas, his projects with a formula that brings honesty to politics: listen, work and convince. Without underhanded tactics, without post-truth networks or propaganda machines. These methods took a lot of dedication, but as he said upon his return after winning one of the battles against the disease: “I’m fine.”

Since Estan Paños burst into the political life of Toledo with the orange color of Ciudadanos in 2015, it always seemed to me that he did not have a strong ideological character. He admitted this to me while emphasizing the exit from extremes as the premise of his ideology. It was in the center, which is the least crowded these days. Even if he had his clear references in this region and not precisely in the acronyms closest to the liberal.

He did not feel comfortable in the internal dynamics of political organizations and on the contrary he appreciated everything that the streets offered him. People he won over with his affection and closeness. A success of his character that I read in all the chronicles on his death. It’s true, the more he felt the affection of the people, the fewer votes he received. He was a magnificent player who, when it came his turn to be coach, had no team. But that didn’t tire him.

There is a lot of merit in working hard in municipal politics and much more without losing hope of improving things for the general interest. This also happened to Jose Maria Poveda, socialist councilor from Toledo, also recently deceased. People are the most important thing in political parties.

The necessary change in the city was one of Esteban Paños’ strong ideas. Many of his proposals for town planning and the environment would help improve our coexistence, as he liked to explain.

Esteban Paños knew the importance of local journalism, even if he always found the place he occupied in the media small, very disproportionate to what he considered deserving. Today, he occupies a prominent place in the city’s press, a testament to the importance of his legacy.

In our conversations, we have always said that politicians, like journalists, in addition to being politicians, must be good people.

Unforgettable Stephen Ragsthe tireless. I’m going to miss you.
