The government sent an official complaint to Mexico for excluding the king from Sheinbaum’s inauguration

The government has officially protested against Mexico for exclude King Felipe VI of the inauguration of the new Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as announced this Friday ‘The country‘ and laSexta was able to confirm it, sent a “note verbale” on Tuesday to the Mexican authorities to express their complaint for not having invited the monarch to the ceremony, a snub which strained relations between the two countries.

In this “verbal note” – although it is a sort of written communication between the embassies and the ministry – Foreign Affairs recalls, according to the aforementioned newspaper, that the king “is the head of state and, as such, assumes the highest representation of the State Spanish in international relations.

He also emphasizes that the intensity of bilateral relations “recommends that institutional relations be developed at the highest level” and recalls that The monarch has attended previous inaugurationsincluding that of the current Mexican president, Andrés López Obrador.

“In an act of such importance to the Mexican people, Spain must be represented by its head of statedemonstrating the mutual will to move forward for the benefit of our brotherly peoples, with a view to a common future of shared prosperity”, we read in the communication, which indicates that “all channels are sold out respectfully convey the level of representation that corresponds to Spain”, there will be no Spanish representation during the ceremony, scheduled for October 1st.

The Executive thus transmitted its formal complaint in the face of an unprecedented event in relations with Latin American countries and the representation of the king in the investitures of leaders. There will therefore be no member of the Government at Sheinbaum’s inauguration, even if yes, there will be a performance of Sumarjunior partner in the coalition government, a move that did not please the socialists.

Sheinbaum justified the veto of Felipe VI for the no response to a lettersent in 2019, in which López Obrador asked the king to apologize for the “abuses” of the conquest. For his part, the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchezcrossed out this Wednesday “unacceptable” and “inexplicable” the decision of Mexico, “a brother country”.

“We find it unacceptable that the presence of Felipe VI, who participated in all the inaugurations, is excluded. We find it unacceptable that our head of state is not accepted. We cannot accept this. We have reported to the Mexican government the absence of any member of the Spanish government,” he declared from New York, before speaking at the UN General Assembly.
