The olive growers and olive oil mills of the Oli denomination of Origin (DO) of Mallorca took stock of the 2024 olive campaign, which they stressed that despite the “best marketing data”, The harvest was reduced by 78% compared to 2023. This is one of the conclusions reached by the members of the DO, gathered this Saturday in Algaida during the annual meeting of its regulatory council.
In a press release, the agricultural entity explained that producers could already anticipate lower production compared to the previous year due to the biological cycle of the olive tree. -vintage tree which alternates a year of good production with another of rest-factors such as alterations caused by the “unusual behavior” of temperatures and drought, as well as the strong presence of olive flies which have further reduced “the volume of olives to be harvested”.
During the meeting, participants were able to learn about the training offering related to olive growing at the UIB from the UIB Plant Production professor. Josephine Bota and professor of olive growing and Elaiotecnia, Miquel A. Moreas well as the preliminary results of the repilo control study in Mallorca carried out by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, reports Europa Press.
Finally, the Regulatory Council presented the diplomas of gratitude to the brands that, throughout 2024, have been awarded in competitions that distinguish the quality of extra virgin olive oils, such as Sa Cadernera, Treurer, Oli de Santanyí and Son Moragues.
On the other hand, a diploma of gratitude was also given to Bota and Jaume Jaume, for their contribution as researchers and trainers, and to Lucas Català as representative of the future of the olive growers group.
The event also took place in the presence of the island advisor for economic promotion and local development of the Consell de Mallorca, Maria del Pilar Amatethe Director General of Agriculture, Fernando Fernandez, among others.
