Boualem Sansal, still detained, appeals his arrest

The French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, detained under an arrest warrant in a prison unit of a hospital in Algiers, has appealed his detention, his lawyer reported on Wednesday, November 27 in a press release.

“Today he was able to speak freely with the Algerian lawyers who work as a team with his French defender. “His general state of health is being monitored and he has not complained of ill-treatment during his detention.”Mᵉ François Zimeray specified in this press release sent to Agence France-Presse.

The prosecution chamber has twenty-one days to examine the appeal, he added.

Paris evokes “unacceptable” detention

Boualem Sansal, who has criticized the Algerian leaders on numerous occasions, was arrested in mid-November when he arrived in his native country from France. According to his defense, he was detained under an article of the Algerian penal code that punishes attacks on state security.

“We will endeavor to prepare a defense, taking care to exclude as much as possible the political dimension of the case.”Mᵉ Zimeray stated in the press release.

The head of French diplomacy, Jean-Noël Barrot, described Wednesday as“unacceptable” “unfounded detention” of the writer.
